Three types of Knee Braces

Prophylactic Knee Braces

These braces are designed to provide minimal support for the prevention or reduction of injuries. Prophylactic knee braces protect the knee from any previous injuries and are specifically useful for protecting the medial collateral ligament (MCL).

Athletes who play contact sports such as football commonly use this type of brace for preventative measures. It's not uncommon to see people using this brace for sports like tennis for the added support and reduction in pressure to the knee joint.

Functional Knee Braces

Functional knee braces are designed to provide superior stabilization that may have sustained an injury. Functional knee braces have a hinge-post-shell design that provides greater stability to reduce any rotational forces in the knee joint. Here are examples of functional knee braces:

Rehabilitative Knee Braces

These knee braces are designed to restrict knee movement to reduce the risk of injury and allow healing. Rehabilitative knee braces are used post-surgery or even after a recent injury.  These braces prevent the chances of a specific motion from happening and re-injuring the ligamenst and tendons.

It is important to note that knee braces may be recommended as a supplementary option with a knee physiotherapy program.

Knee Braces may be recommended for the following medical conditions

All patients that require a knee brace will undergo a comprehensive orthopedic assessment to determine the ultimate effectiveness of a knee brace to promote greater abilities to perform activities of daily living. A patients’ need for a knee brace will vary based on the presenting medical condition and not all patients will require a knee brace, even though the medical condition is the same.

Research has demonstrated that knee braces do provide sufficient stability, whereas the majority of patients do report reduction in pain and being able to perform activities of daily living.
